James Russell is Professor of Psychology at Boston College, and editor in chief of Emotion Review. His work focuses on affective responses to space, emotional interpretation of faces, and children’s understanding of emotion. Along with his colleagues at the Emotion Development Lab at Boston, Russell’s work challenges existing psychological paradigm of universal emotional expression. He has suggested abandoning the concept of emotion as a scientific term, treating it as a folk concept instead.

Their presentations will be followed by a round-table discussion on the theoretical and methodological challenges raised by this field, chaired by Thomas Dixon.
Camilla Schjerning, (University of Copenhagen): Through the lens of court cases, this paper explores the role of emotions in the experience, expression and negotiation of the boundaries of privacy and private space in late 18th century Copenhagen.
