Symposium on sovereignty and human rights

The Queen Mary University of London Annual Symposium in the Humanities and Social Sciences will be held on on 15 January 2016, on the theme of Sovereignty and Human Rights.

The Symposium will consider two new books: Richard Tuck’s The Sleeping Sovereign and Samuel Moyn’s Christian Human Rights.

Registration is essential, so please book in advance here.

Samuel Moyn’s Christian Human Rights can be purchased directly from the University of Pennsylvania Press or from Amazon. The proofs of Richard Tuck’s The Sleeping Sovereign, due out in February, will be pre-circulated on request to registered participants. To acquire a copy, please contact Vanessa Lim at v.y.lim@qmul.ac.uk.

In addition to Samuel Moyn and Richard Tuck, the speakers are: Annabel Brett (Cambridge), Christopher Brooke (Cambridge), Udi Greenberg (Dartmouth) and Sarah Shortall (Oxford). The complete programme will be distributed in due course.

Roundtable on Empire and Revolution

A roundtable discussion of Richard Bourke’s Empire & Revolution: The Political Life of Edmund Burke will take place on Wednesday 13 January 2016 at 5:15 p.m.

Rachel Hammersley (Newcastle), Joanna Innes (Oxford), Robert Travers (Cornell) and Donald Winch (Sussex) will be speaking. The discussion will be chaired by Quentin Skinner (QMUL).
