Workshop: Dividing Lines – Majoritarianism in South AsiaFriday 27th March, 2020
2:00 pm, QMUL Mile End Campus
This afternoon workshop will explore conceptual and historical questions about majoritarianism in South Asia, and its relation to how we think about nationalism, identity, violence and democracy. Participants in the afternoon workshop will be invited to consider a series of problems, exploring methodological approaches as well as scholarly interventions into the present political context. Discussions will be guided by three specialists working in different contexts across South Asia, focusing variously on majoritarianism and war/insurgency in Pakistan; majoritarianism and history/memory in Bangladesh; & majoritarianism and space/geography in Sri Lanka. Speakers to be announced shortly.
Spaces for the workshop are limited. Please send a short (~150 words) email to c.moffat@qmul.ac.uk detailing your institutional affiliation and research interests by 20 March 2020. Due to ongoing UCU strike action, places will not be confirmed before this date.
The workshop is scheduled for 14:00-16:30. Afterwards, from 17:30-20:00, there will be a screening of the documentary Lynch Nation and a panel discussion with Furqan Faridi (Co-Director), Amrit Wilson (Activist and Author), Rohit Dasgupta (University of Loughborough and Labour Councillor, Newham), Akshi Singh (QMUL) and Annapurna Waughray (MMU). Chaired by Ash Devasundaram (QMUL). Part of the 2020 UK Asian Film Festival. Please register to attend the Lynch Nation screening via Eventbrite.
