{"id":94,"date":"2021-06-08T17:11:10","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T17:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/visual-and-material-forum\/?p=94"},"modified":"2021-09-28T16:20:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T16:20:59","slug":"sara-lipton-jewish-eyes-looking-at-jews-looking-at-the-cross-29-march-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/visual-and-material-forum\/2021\/06\/08\/sara-lipton-jewish-eyes-looking-at-jews-looking-at-the-cross-29-march-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Sara Lipton &#8211; Jewish Eyes: Looking at Jews looking at the Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Visual Cultures Forum is delighted to welcome <strong>Sara Lipton (State University of New York at Stony Brook)<\/strong> speaking on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jewish Eyes &#8211; Looking at Jews looking at the Cross<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate Centre 604 (6th floor), 6pm &#8211; Thursday, 28th March<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this talk I explore how Christians used images of Jews to think about their engagement with their <em>own<\/em>&nbsp;primary sign \u2013 the cross.&nbsp; After briefly reviewing two images that have shaped my thinking on the topic, and which I analyzed in depth in my recent book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/saralipton.com\">Dark Mirror<\/a><\/em><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>I turn to a previously unstudied image of an infidel contemplating Christ, which, I believe, highlights yet another area of Christian concern.&nbsp; I close by examining a series of pastoral texts that echo this concern and help illuminate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/commcms\/history\/people\/faculty\/lipton.html\">Sara Lipton<\/a> is Professor of History at Stony Brook, New York. She is the Spring 2019 Distinguished Visiting Fellow in the School of History at Queen Mary, University of London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is free. All welcome!
