Tibetan text on khata

This project looks at the white scarf-like textile called ‘khata’, ubiquitous to the cultural landscape of Tibet and the Himalayas. Given to both human guests and Buddhist deities; left at sacred sites and mountain passes; and found in temples, homes, automobiles and even around the neck of a beloved pet, these woven texts tell a unique story of material religion in a region characterized by the dynamic preservation of Buddhist teachings and an interactive relationship with its volatile landscape.
