The lecture, titled &#8216;Judith Shklar&#8217;s Critique of Cold War Liberalism&#8217;, will be followed by a drinks reception, to which all are welcome. <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/annual-nicolai-rubinstein-lecture-2018-samuel-moyn-tickets-40092958117\">Registration<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> for this event is essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Abstract<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Political liberalism is today in dire straits. Cold War legacies have made it a dubious theory of individual liberty against the expansive state rather than a doctrine that promotes social freedom and material equality. This lecture will focus on the leading post-War American political thinker, Judith Shklar \u2013 returning, decades before she propounded her famous \u201cliberalism of fear,\u201d to her earliest writings. These in effect mounted an argument against her future self. Shklar\u2019s first book,\u00a0<i>After Utopia<\/i>, offered a critique of the limits of Cold War liberalism, before she herself came to adopt a version of it.
