His talk will consider the interaction of representative democracy and referendums and the role of the courts in mediating the two. Places are limited, and so booking is essential.<\/p>\n<p>Please click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ukiXRE_NsnI&amp;feature=youtu.be\">here<\/a> to watch a recording of the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"noTopMargin\"><!--more-->About Professor Ackerman:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.yale.edu\/bruce-ackerman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bruce Ackerman<\/a>\u00a0is Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale, and the author of eighteen books that have had a broad influence in political philosophy, constitutional law, and public policy. His major works include\u00a0<em>Social Justice in the Liberal State<\/em>\u00a0and his multivolume constitutional history,\u00a0<em>We the People<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">His most recent books are\u00a0<em>We the People: The Civil Rights Revolution<\/em>\u00a0(2014),\u00a0<em>The Decline and Fall of the American Republic<\/em>(2010),\u00a0<em>The Failure of the Founding Fathers<\/em>\u00a0(2005), and\u00a0<em>Before the Next Attack<\/em>\u00a0(2006). His book,\u00a0<em>The Stakeholder Society<\/em>\u00a0(with Anne Alstott), served as a basis for Tony Blair\u2019s recent introduction of child investment accounts in the United Kingdom, and his book,\u00a0<em>Deliberation Day<\/em>\u00a0(with James Fishkin) served as a basis for \u201cPBS Deliberation Day\u201d, a national series of citizen deliberations produced by McNeill-Lehrer on national television for the 2004 elections. He also writes for the general public, contributing frequently to\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em>, and has served, without charge, as a lawyer on matters of public importance. He was a lead witness for President Clinton before the House Judiciary Committee\u2019s Impeachment Hearings, and a principal spokesman for Al Gore before the Florida legislature during the election crisis of 2000. Professor Ackerman is a member of the American Law Institute and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
