For example, members of the team were invited to deliver workshops in each year of the project by the director of the International Medieval Congress, the largest annual gathering of medieval scholars in Europe. These involved live demonstrations of analytical equipment with an opportunity for participants to discuss the practicalities and the possible uses of scientific approaches to answer their own research questions.

The team also engaged actively with conservators and heritage photographers to highlight the potential of heritage science and the professional opportunities available to them through research collaboration. For example, Maciej Pawlikowski participated in a panel discussion with colleagues from the John Rylands Research Institute and Library and the Fitzwilliam Museum at the annual conference of the Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography, the primary UK organisation for cultural heritage photographers. They spoke about the challenges of balancing research engagement with the service provision involved in running an imaging laboratory.

Some of the most effective engagement opportunities were informal. While visiting other institutions such as the London Museum, National Library of Wales, Lambeth Palace Library and Leeds University Library to conduct analysis, team members shared expertise with peers, conducting demonstrations of equipment and giving advice on procedures and ways of working.

The HiPS project team recognised that we were pioneering new multidisciplinary ways of working and were keen to model this collaborative approach to colleagues across institutions.
