The project has benefitted immensely from being embedded in some of the world’s leading institutions and from a nearly unparalleled access to equipment and expertise.

It is important that the project’s innovative approaches are shared equitably. The project team has therefore embarked on developing means to ensure that techniques deployed and developed by the project team are available to a wider array of institutions and individuals. This is especially pertinent to colleagues from smaller institutions or from those in developing economies, which have had less access to heritage science and key technologies.

In the course of the project collaborations were designed and implemented with a wide range of institutions and individuals. These have supported collection care and research while presenting new technologies to colleagues. The team has also provided bespoke object analysis for researchers and institutions wishing to explore objects in their collections or further their research.

Workshops, masterclasses and presentations have presented project’s methodologies and discoveries to diverse audiences. Thus, for example, the project team has presented for three consecutive years at the Intentional Medieval Congress (Leeds, 2024-6), bringing a range of equipment on-stage and presenting ‘live’ analysis. This enabled colleagues, both academic and professional services, to witness the nature of the collaborative work, its values and limitations.

Capacity Building in the Himalayas

The project has engaged in a long-term knowledge transfer and capacity building project in the Himalayas. Working in close collaboration with the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, the Kingdom of Bhutan, the project team has travelled to key sites, museums and libraries across the region. In dialogue with colleagues in the region they have provided equipment and bespoke training, creating capacity for collection care and research. Equipment such as cameras, laptops, and digital microscopes was donated so that local teams can continue their work independently, while continuous advisory scheme has been established.

Building on Dr Ayesha Fuentes’s years of work in the region, team members have provided equipment and practical advice for the National Library and Archives (Thimphu), the Royal Heritage Museum (Trongsa), the Royal Textile Academy (Thimphu), and the National Museum of Bhutan (Paro). Working with conservators and curators they have supported digitisation and collection care, as well as building capacity for new ways of researching historical collections. This endeavour was supported by QMUL’s Impact Fund.

Following the visit the project team has provided online surgeries to further support colleagues in the region. With better understanding of the needs and limitations of work in the Himalayas they have begun developing bespoke tools and training to best support and expand the work of heritage researchers, conservators and curators. Dr David Mills has led on the development of bespoke fibre-optics spectroscopy to enable non-invasive material analysis for historical artefacts and artworks.
