Running from January 2024 to December 2026, the project employs a range of imaging and spectroscopic methods, from 3D microscopy and Micro-CT scanning to DNA analysis and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, to explore how ancient books were used, modified and venerated. The project investigates a wide range of books and other textual objects, from Islamic talismans and Jewish Bibles, through books mutilated in the Reformation, to Korean sutras and Buddhist sculptures.

The project brings together historians, heritage scientists, librarians, conservators, technicians, digital specialists and curators, presenting a model for inter- and cross-disciplinary work. It is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London, Cambridge University Library, Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the National Library of Wales and other institutions across the UK and Europe. As many of these books were, and still are, sacred objects, faith and community groups help frame our research and assist in its dissemination.

The project engages with both public and academic audiences. An exhibition in Aberystwyth has brought together, for the first time in nearly 500 years, Henry VIII’s and Thomas Cromwell’s sibling copies of the Great Bible. Two visits to Bhutan have allowed the project team to engage with local heritage professionals supporting knowledge transfer and promoting the use of low-cost tools for conservation and examination of local artefacts. A special issue of the journal Quaerendo, published in early 2027, will showcase key project results.

“Hidden in Plain Sight: Historical and Scientific Analysis of Premodern Sacred Books” is a three-year research project funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
