{"id":68,"date":"2019-04-05T10:25:22","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T10:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/handson\/?page_id=68"},"modified":"2019-06-24T11:39:53","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T11:39:53","slug":"training-schedule-2019","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/handson\/training-schedule-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Training Schedule 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Dates<\/h2>\n<p>Online module release dates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Module 1: Monday 15th April 2019<\/li>\n<li>Module 2: Monday 13th May 2019<\/li>\n<li>Module 3: Monday 24th June 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Aim of Training<\/h2>\n<p>To gain a basic familiarity with the topics of web technologies, representing text in digital form, digital images, and design thinking, so that participants are prepared to take part in the Hands:On Hackathon, 8th-12th July 2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Goals<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce participants to each other prior to the Hackathon.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce the collaborative tools we will use during the Hackathon.<\/li>\n<li>Gain a basic familiarity with how websites are coded \u2018behind the scenes\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Understand what \u2018text encoding\u2019 is and how to apply semantic markup to a text.<\/li>\n<li>Experiment with viewing and comparing digital images using modern tools online.<\/li>\n<li>Understand what \u2018design thinking\u2019 is and how to create rapid prototypes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Group Collaboration<\/h2>\n<p>As part of the training, we have a Slack space (online chat room) where you can \u2018meet\u2019 with fellow participants in advance of the Hackathon and build a rapport. This Slack space will also be used during the Hackathon event itself as part of how we work together.<\/p>\n<p>We will invite you individually to the Slack by email. Writing messages and responding to others\u2019 messages is a part of the online modules, and we encourage you to use it as an opportunity to get to know each other better and to help each other with the modules. If you have questions about module instructions or content, please post a message on Slack.<\/p>\n<h2>Online Modules<\/h2>\n<p>There are three preparatory modules for the Hands:On Hackathon. These are released once a month in April, May and June, in advance of the Hackathon in July.<\/p>\n<p>The modules are designed for complete beginners to gain a <i>basic familiarity<\/i> with the topics of web technologies, representing text in digital form, digital images, and design thinking. There are no tests or pass marks but we do expect you to participate fully. You are <i>not<\/i> required to code in the Hackathon, but we <i>will<\/i> be using design thinking in the Hackathon.<\/p>\n<p>All modules are delivered online and require <strong>approximately 4 hours\u2019 work<\/strong>, which you can do at any time in the month following their release.
