The German Peasants’ War of 1524\/5 was the biggest popular uprising in Western Europe before the French Revolution. It altered the course of the Lutheran Reformation, making it far more conservative. Thousands were slain as the revolt was bloodily suppressed. If we are to understand what made people risk everything they had to engage in rebellion, we need to understand their emotions, and we also need to understand theology differently. This paper outlines the emotional patterns of the Peasants’ War and asks how they can help explain what happened.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1682 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/emotions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-2019-10-07-at-10.44.17-261x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/emotions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-2019-10-07-at-10.44.17-261x300.png 261w, https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/emotions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-2019-10-07-at-10.44.17-768x884.png 768w, https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/emotions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-2019-10-07-at-10.44.17-624x718.png 624w, https:\/\/projects.history.qmul.ac.uk\/emotions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-2019-10-07-at-10.44.17.png 784w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n
Doors at 6.00pm, lecture at 6.30pm.
